Watering at Cadder

RTC's 'The West Highlander' three day Scottish tour needed water at several locations over the weekend. Duncan Hill Ltd played a key role in this at Abington and Cadder Yard on Friday and Sunday. Dave Dixon went up to Abington on Friday afternoon with 3000 gallons for Leander and on to Cadder on Glasgow's northern outskirts to top up John Cameron's 'wee engine' The Great Marquess having run light engine from its home at Thornton to take the train forward to Fort William on the second leg of the tour.
I went up on Sunday with a curtainsider for Dave to tip on Monday at Livingston, collected the tanker, topped it up with water and went to Cadder Yard to meet Chris Beet and his team with Leander to get them south over Beattock on the final leg of the tour.
I filled the tender to the point where the water was lapping round Gordon Hodgson's ankles on the footplate, filled the header tank on the support coach and damped down the coal in the tender as well. Job done by 14.30 and I set sail for home.
Driving south through Bishopbriggs I had a call from West Coast Railways' Ops Manager, Peter Walker to say that The Great Marquess had been unable to get all the water she needed at Crianlarich on its way back to Glasgow because someone had inadvertently parked their car over the hydrant where they had hoped to get water! The car was manhandled out of the way but precious pathing minutes had been lost.
Lucky I had a standpipe with me!
Nigel Dobbing would, I'm sure, be keen to hear from the inconsiderate motorist whose car caused the problem (you're bound to know who you are) as the bill for the watering at Cadder Yard had to go very slightly over quote for the extra time involved!

Watering Scots Guardsman

There were two steam engines at Carlisle today; 46115 and 46201 both requiring water having hauled trains north over Shap and the S&C respectively.
I was asked to take 4000 gallons to Upperby to fill the tender of Scots Guardsman, the flagship loco of James Shuttleworth's West Coast Railway Company.

The weather was shocking and the light was all over the place so the photos I took were pretty pants, really. The only three worth posting.

6233 worked RTC's 'The Royal Scot' over Shap today. Originally to be operated by EWS but was switched to West Coast at the eleventh hour. This meant that a water tanker would be required at Carlisle. While EWS have their own facilities to hand at Upperby, West Coast Railways are not welcome to use these and therefore have to make other arrangements. A Duncan Hill tanker was dispatched at short notice to do the honours.

60009 on the Hadrian at Appleby

Union of South Africa was working RTC's 'The Hadrian' tour from Tyne Yard to Hellifield today, and tankered water was not required as adequate supply can be locally sourced at Upperby Shed, Appleby Station and Hellifield Station. With the luxury of a Saturday off, I bundled the family into the wife's Galaxy and took them to Appleby to see Number 9.

The Tall Ships tour at Ashton

Finding a suitable location to water a steam loco on the trans-Pennine route around Manchester proved to be more complicated than one might expect. With hydrants in short supply and various access issues, it was decided to use a tanker for watering 60009 at Ashton under Lyne on RTC's 'The Tall Ships' tour from Scarborough to Liverpool and return.
Here is a series of shots taken to record the layout of the station from an operational aspect; the positioning of tanker and loco as well as number of hoses required etc. Probably not very interesting but handy for anyone doing the job in future. It may well be the case that Ashton station is used as a regular water stop in due course.

The Coronation at Berwick

The rain was running down the back of my neck as I layed fire hose along the cess to signal TW167 in order to water 60009 in Berwick DGL. Everything was in place to fill her tender with 4000 gallons of West Cumbrian water. About an hour before the booked arrival time, I got a call from a hugely disappointed Fraser to say that Number 9 had failed at Tyne Yard. I hung around in Berwick P-Way yard for the night with a tanker full of water just in case Sir Nigel Gresley was to make it that far north. At 20.20 67002 pulled into Berwick Station for a crew change before taking The Coronation forward to Edinburgh - running some 130 minutes late.
