Watering Scots Guardsman
10th May 2009

There were two steam engines at Carlisle today; 46115 and 46201 both requiring water having hauled trains north over Shap and the S&C respectively.
I was asked to take 4000 gallons to Upperby to fill the tender of Scots Guardsman, the flagship loco of James Shuttleworth's West Coast Railway Company.

The weather was shocking and the light was all over the place so the photos I took were pretty pants, really. The only three worth posting.

There's a single road cord running from Pettrill Bridge Junction on the Settle line, under Carlisle's London Road to Upperby Yard on the WCML which allows locos to effectively carry out a three point turn. It crosses the access road to Network Rails' main P-Way depot in Carlisle so it also affords convenient HGV access for providing coal and water.

The loco didn't take coal on this occasion but the 4000 gal tender was topped up with highest quality West Cumbrian water from the Duncan Hill tanker
