Two lads from Cockermouth, Charlie Hicks and Mark Nicholson, set themselves a challenge to drive to all 44 counties in England in 24 hours. Former British Rally Champion, Malcolm Wilson, whose firm M-Sport runs the BP-Ford World Rally Team very kindly lent us a modified Ford Fiesta ST to do the challenge in order to raise money for the "Pride of Cumbria" Air Ambulance.
We set off from Cockermouth at midday on Sat 24 June 2006 and completed the mission 23hrs 14mins and some 1320 miles later raising just over £5,500.
We had sponsorship from local industry and also from individuals, and in order to attempt to verify where we had been, we took a camera along to record the journey. We photographed boundary signs where possible and other landmarks if these were mising or hidden from view. In the case of Bedfordshire, for example, contractors carrying out motorway maintenance on the M1 had placed a roadworks sign directly in front of the county sign. (DOH!) This sort of thing happened once or twice so we improvised where we could. Oddly enough the Cumbria boundary sign on the A69 at Roadhead was obscured by contractor's equipment so we nipped up to Gretna to get a shot of a sign that said Cumbria.
Credit is due to our wives and families for putting up with us during the months of planning and for not throwing us out! Thanks Julie and Catherine! |
